Research Task: Comic Visionaries

For this research task, I need to search online for the below classic science fiction and fantasy artists’ artwork and make brief notes on their own individual visual approaches.

The classic science fiction and fantasy artists that I need to research:

Wally (also known as ‘Wallace’) Wood, a 1950s American illustrator for EC Comics, ‘Mad’ magazine, and science fiction anthologies.

● How is their artwork made? Pencil & ink
● Is it drawn or painted? Drawn and painted (with ink)
● How do their styles differ? Some are in monochrome and others are in colour (mostly covers)
● Does their style seem dated? No, not really, it’s a traditional comic style that doesn’t seem to age
● Are there contemporary artists that seem to be influenced by them? Dave Gibbons, Will Elder, Joe Orlando and John Severin?

Frank Frazetta (1970s American painter of book covers and poster art) whose oil paintings of characters like ‘ Conan the Barbarian ’ are considered classic images of fantasy art.

● How is their artwork made? Oil Paint
● Is it drawn or painted? Painted
● How do their styles differ? Stylistically his pieces are all quite similar, colour use is the only thing that is different.
● Does their style seem dated? A bit, only some pieces seem like they were made in the 70s or 80s to me, but others are still awesome.
● Are there contemporary artists that seem to be influenced by them? Boris Vallejo, Clyde Caldwell, Keith Parkinson, Larry Elmore, and Robin Wood?

Moebius (also known as ‘Jean Giraud’), a French comic artist whose clean line and depiction of empty spaces were inspired by the Mexican desert. He also designed the astronauts’ spacesuits for the film ‘Alien’ (1979).

● How is their artwork made? Watercolour, coloured ink, acrylic, pen & ink, and oil paint.
● Is it drawn or painted? Draw and paint
● How do their styles differ? His style stays quite similar throughout but a few pieces look like they are from the 70s or 80s comics.
● Does their style seem dated? Some pieces look dated and others look like they were done yesterday
● Are there contemporary artists that seem to be influenced by them? Richard Corben, Philippe Druillet and Enki Bilal?

Barry Windsor-Smith, a British illustrator whose 1970s ‘Conan the Barbarian’ artwork for Marvel incorporated the influences of Art Nouveau into mainstream comics.

● How is their artwork made? Lithograph, pencil, pen & ink and coloured ink
● Is it drawn or painted? Ink and some look digitally coloured?
● How do their styles differ? Some pieces are in monochrome others are full colour, and some are also very detailed.
● Does their style seem dated? Yes a bit, but like the others on this research list a few seem like they were made recently.
● Are there contemporary artists that seem to be influenced by them? Bernie Albert (Berni) Wrightson, Steve Ditko.
