Exercise 2: Create a Children’s Comic Character

For this exercise, I need to invent a character. First I need to choose from three options for the character description:

  1. Young Detective
  2. Space Kid
  3. Animal Character

I decided on ‘Space Kid’ as I had the most ideas with this one:

Images to inspire me:

Interestingly when I typed in ‘Space Kid’ into Google a show from 1966 came up.

Researching into the show further quite a few shows in the 1960s were based on the topic of Space. I think this is because on July 20, 1969, two Americans, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, landed a spacecraft on the Moon and walked on the Moon. Shows include ‘Space Kidettes’ 1966 and ‘The Jetsons’ 1962.

I also thought about this scene from one of the Spongebob Squarepants episodes I watched when I was younger, I always thought this scene was unnerving.

Next, I need to do some rough ideas for each of my potential characters.

Now I have sketched some rough ideas, I need to draw a finished colour character design (or digital drawing) on an A3 sheet of paper or card.

Evaluation:

I am very happy with the outcome of this exercise. I enjoyed creating a character from scratch and being able to bring one of my dark ideas to life. I originally thought about creating a ‘normal’ character when I read ‘Space Kid’ and had an idea of a child ina superman pose with a ‘swoosh’ behind him in space but I knew this would be to ordinary for me so I then thought about how I could stretch the idea into a more bazzare one. I thought of how I could design a kid in the vacuum of space and how they would look. I think my idea is original and I like it 🙂
