Part 2: Natural Sciences

research point:

For this research task, I need to find examples of illustrators who have adapted their image-making approach to accommodate advances in imaging technologies. I will find contemporary examples of illustrators working with new technologies.

contemporary – Valerie Altounian:

contemporary – MELANIE LEE:

traditional – David S. Goodsell:

comparison – contemporary & traditional image-making approaches?

These image-making approaches use very different mediums. The two contemporary illustrator’s examples above in comparison to the traditional illustrator’s example show many similarities also. All three seem to use a variety of colours. The 4D illustrations are obviously not flat drawings which makes them look very futuristic, I almost forget that these are illustrations sometimes as they look so lifelike like models. Personally, I still prefer the 2D science illustrations as they look more informative and interesting and would be used in science papers and research. The 4D illustrations look more aesthetically pleasing like they would only be used on the front cover of a science magazine.

Exercise 1: A Rose by any other name:

For this exercise, I need to choose a house plant, focus on a small area and draw what I see. I will be accurate in describing shape, form and details.

Now I will draw the plant again, this time from a much more creative perspective, I will describe the plant but in simpler and bolder terms.

Evaluation:

This exercise was great, I really enjoyed illustrating my little tomato plant. I feel as though my creative perspective drawing (third) looks better than my first two more realistic drawings. I think it’s because I personally find it more aesthetically pleasing but this could differ depending on a person’s taste. I showed the illustrations to my mum for feedback and she said first that she liked all three but then mentioned that the third drawing looks like something that would be used on a card, which in hand works with my own review of the illustration as I said it was more aesthetically pleasing than the first.
